Heath Goldfields Limited has officially launched a significant five-year, $20 million Community Development Plan aimed at revitalizing communities within the Bogoso-Prestea mining enclave in Ghana’s Western Region. The initiative, announced recently, will channel substantial investment into key areas including education, healthcare, infrastructure, skills development, enterprise support, and job creation across affected communities such as Prestea, Bogoso, Beppoh, and Nsuta, marking a proactive approach to ensure mining benefits directly enhance local livelihoods.
The comprehensive plan stems from extensive consultations with local stakeholders, including traditional leaders, youth groups, women’s associations, and residents. This collaborative approach underscores Heath Goldfields’ commitment to aligning its development efforts with the specific needs and aspirations of the host communities, moving beyond traditional resource extraction to foster sustainable development.
Central to the plan are several flagship projects designed to create lasting impact. These include the establishment of a dedicated Nursing Training College in Prestea and a Technical and Vocational Training Centre in Beppoh, aiming to build local capacity in critical sectors. Furthermore, a modern Community Centre is planned for Bogoso, and a new market centre will be constructed in Bondaye, enhancing social infrastructure and economic activity.
Additional infrastructure improvements are slated for various communities. Dumase will receive a new Junior High School (JHS) block and a clinic, while Brakwaline will benefit from a new basic school facility covering creche to JHS levels. Health services will be bolstered with the construction of CHPS compounds in Kumsuno and Kwameniampa, alongside the provision of portable water systems for Akokobediabro and crucial road network upgrades in Mbease Nsuta.
Heath Goldfields also announced ambitious plans to establish an underground campus of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) in Prestea. This initiative aims to foster higher education and specialized training within the mining sector, directly benefiting the local population. The company will also focus on improving existing educational facilities by transforming the Prestea Goldfields Basic School and the Golden Star Basic School in Bogoso into model schools, complemented by a scholarship program for bright but financially disadvantaged students.
To address youth unemployment and skill gaps, the company will implement youth apprenticeship programs and graduate trainee opportunities. These initiatives are designed to equip young people with relevant skills and experience, preparing them for employment within the mining and broader technical industries, thereby creating a pipeline of local talent.
The launch of this development plan follows Heath Goldfields’ significant efforts to revive the Bogoso-Prestea Mine, which had been dormant for over two years. The mine was in a state of disrepair, characterized by flooded underground workings, abandoned pits, deteriorated infrastructure, and substantial outstanding worker obligations, including unpaid salaries, pensions, and severance packages.
Patrick Appiah Mensah, Managing Director of Heath Goldfields, detailed the company’s aggressive dewatering campaign, describing it as one of the most challenging in Ghana’s recent mining history. This effort successfully restored operations, allowing for the resumption of open-pit mining and partial restoration of the processing plant, culminating in the mine’s first gold pour after the extended shutdown.
