UMB Partners with GFA in Three-Year Deal to Boost Ghanaian Football

Universal Merchant Bank (UMB) has officially become the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) official banking partner through a new three-year agreement. Announced on Friday, May 29, at UMB’s headquarters, the partnership aims to bolster Ghanaian football, including supporting the Black Stars’ campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

A Strategic Alliance for Football Development

The collaboration extends beyond mere sponsorship, signifying a comprehensive approach to developing the sport in Ghana. UMB’s Head of Corporate Communication, Edem Knight Tay, emphasized the long-term vision for the partnership. “The duration for this partnership is three years, and it’s not just for the World Cup,” Tay stated.

“It’s a partnership with the GFA, so all the activities of the GFA, UMB happens to be the official banking partners from now right through the next three years, and we are hoping that we will continue even after the third year,” she added. This indicates a commitment to sustained growth and support for the GFA’s broader objectives.

Beyond Banking: Comprehensive Support

UMB’s involvement is set to encompass a wide range of support for the football ecosystem. “Football and banking have similarities,” noted Tay. “Apart from being banking partners, what is also in this partnership is that UMB is going to be assisting GFA when it comes to training footballers, coaches, referees and everything that brings football together…even wealth management.”

This multifaceted support highlights UMB’s intention to invest in the entire football development pathway, from grassroots talent to elite performance and the professional development of those involved in the sport.

GFA’s Vision and Call for Collaboration

The Ghana Football Association welcomed the partnership, viewing it as a crucial step towards realizing its ambitious vision. GFA Vice President Mark Addo, speaking at the announcement, praised UMB’s commitment. “This partnership represents the belief in GFA, it also represents the belief in the power of football to unite our nation,” he said.

Addo articulated the GFA’s strategic goals: “From the Ghana Football Association, our vision is clear: to build a football ecosystem which is competitive, inclusive, sustain and capable of producing success both on and off the field.” He stressed the necessity of such partnerships for achieving this vision, stating, “This vision we know requires investment, partnership and requires institution that are willing to support not just the elite football but the entire football development pathway.”

Symbolic Exchange and Future Outlook

During the ceremony, the GFA presented UMB with a signed jersey and other commemorative souvenirs, symbolizing the official commencement of their collaboration. This gesture underscores the significance of the alliance for both entities.

The agreement signifies a proactive approach by UMB to leverage the unifying power of football for brand visibility and corporate social responsibility. For the GFA, it represents a vital financial and developmental injection needed to enhance the sport’s infrastructure, training programs, and national team performance.

Looking ahead, the success of this three-year partnership will likely be measured not only by the Black Stars’ performance but also by the tangible improvements in football development across Ghana, from coaching standards to grassroots participation and the financial well-being of its stakeholders. The GFA’s call for further support suggests that this is the beginning of a broader movement to revitalize Ghana’s football landscape.
