Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, stated on Monday, June 8, that her recent Best Regional Minister award is a direct result of her performance and the initiatives undertaken during her tenure. Speaking to Asaase Radio, she viewed the recognition as motivation to further address the region’s challenges.
Award Reflects Substantive Work
Minister Ocloo expressed that she was not surprised by the award, emphasizing that public acknowledgment of diligent effort serves as a powerful encouragement for leaders. “I wasn’t surprised by the award I received because sometimes I keep telling people that the little efforts you do when people recognise what you are doing, and they give you that recognition, it empowers you to do more,” she stated.
Key Achievements Highlighted
The Minister detailed several areas where her administration has made significant strides. These include improvements in sanitation management across the Greater Accra Region, effective resolution of chieftaincy disputes, the implementation of street lighting projects, and the settlement of boundary-related issues.
“I know I’ve done a lot for the good people of Greater Accra. Yes, expectations are high though but I think I’ve done a lot that I deserve that recognition, and so to God be the glory. I have tackled sanitation within the Greater Accra Region. I have tackled chieftaincy disputes within the Greater Accra Region. I have tackled street lighting within the Greater Accra Region. I have tackled boundary issues within the Greater Accra Region,” Minister Ocloo elaborated.
Addressing Persistent Flooding
A critical focus for the Minister has been tackling the persistent flooding that plagues parts of the capital city. Her administration has undertaken demolition exercises targeting structures built on waterways and within protected Ramsar sites, a move aimed at safeguarding lives and improving urban conditions.
While acknowledging that these interventions have drawn criticism and potentially made her unpopular with certain segments of the population, Minister Ocloo maintained their necessity. She underscored that these difficult decisions are essential for the long-term well-being and safety of the region’s residents.
Future Outlook and Continued Efforts
The recognition serves as a catalyst for continued dedication. Minister Ocloo indicated her commitment to building on past successes and tackling emerging issues within Greater Accra. The focus remains on sustainable development, improved living conditions, and robust governance across the region.
Moving forward, attention will likely be on the sustained impact of these initiatives and the administration’s capacity to navigate further challenges, including ongoing urban development pressures and environmental concerns. The effectiveness of these measures in creating lasting positive change for the residents of Greater Accra will be a key indicator of future success.
