Governance expert Professor Baffour Agyemang-Duah has voiced significant concerns regarding the growing trend of private organizations bestowing awards upon public officials, questioning the credibility and purpose of these recognitions. Speaking on Channel One TV on Monday, June 8, Prof. Agyemang-Duah argued that the ultimate arbiters of public officials’ performance should be the electorate, not privately organized award schemes.
Questioning the Criteria and Legitimacy
Prof. Agyemang-Duah acknowledged that public servants might deserve accolades for outstanding contributions. However, he expressed reservations about award programs that honor numerous government appointees without transparently outlining their assessment standards.
