The Central Tongu District in Ghana’s Volta Region is launching intensified awareness campaigns to combat a surge in teenage pregnancies, a persistent challenge officials are tackling through education and community engagement. District Chief Executive Addison Mornyuie highlighted the issue as a critical socio-economic and public health concern affecting adolescents, driven by social pressures, economic hardship, and insufficient parental guidance.
Addressing a Growing Concern
The alarming rise in teenage pregnancies in the Central Tongu District has prompted local authorities to escalate their efforts. District Chief Executive Addison Mornyuie stated that the phenomenon poses a significant threat to the well-being and future prospects of young people in the region.
Mr. Mornyuie made these remarks during an educational outreach program held at Mafi-Sasekpe. The event focused on equipping adolescents with crucial knowledge about menstrual hygiene management and broader reproductive health awareness.
He emphasized that a sustained educational approach, targeting both young people and their parents, is fundamental to reversing this worrying trend. The District Assembly is actively seeking partnerships with non-governmental organizations (NGOs), civil society groups, and concerned individuals to bolster community-wide sensitization efforts.
