Hundreds of residents in Peace Town, a suburb of Ngleshie Amanfro, were displaced early this morning as torrential floodwaters swept through the community, severing the town from the rest of Amanfro and destroying its main bridge. The disaster struck after hours of heavy rainfall caused the River Jei to overflow its banks, leaving many stranded and facing prolonged detours.
Context of the Catastrophe
This devastating event follows prolonged periods of heavy rainfall, which overwhelmed the natural drainage systems in the Ngleshie Amanfro area. The River Jei, a key waterway, could not contain the volume of water, leading to widespread inundation of surrounding communities, with Peace Town bearing the brunt of the impact.
Widespread Displacement and Destruction
The force of the overflowing river washed away the primary bridge connecting Peace Town to Amanfro. This destruction has left hundreds of residents trapped on either side of the collapsed crossing, unable to reach their homes, workplaces, or schools. Eyewitnesses described the rapid rise of floodwaters, catching many families completely off guard.
