Frankfurt, Germany – The German branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has appealed to Ghana’s National Peace Council, traditional authorities, and other key national stakeholders to intervene in what they allege is the targeted persecution and harassment of opposition members by state security agencies under the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) government. This call follows the recent arrest and detention of NPP Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, known as Abronye DC, a development that has reportedly increased anxiety among NPP supporters globally.
Concerns Over State Security Use Against Opposition
Michael Arthur (McArthur), an aspiring Communications Officer for NPP Germany, voiced significant concern over the perceived increasing use of state security institutions against opposition figures. He warned that this trend, if unchecked, could escalate political tensions between Ghana’s two major parties and damage the nation’s democratic reputation.
Arthur cautioned that such actions could deepen political mistrust and polarization, particularly as the country approaches future national political activities. He stressed the importance of intervention by respected national institutions to foster dialogue and encourage restraint.
Call for Mediation and Governance Focus
The NPP Germany branch specifically urged the National Peace Council, religious leaders, traditional rulers, and civil society organizations to adopt a mediation role. Their aim is to help preserve the peace and stability for which Ghana is internationally recognized.
Arthur emphasized that democratic governance fundamentally relies on tolerance, respect for differing opinions, and the impartial application of the law. He argued that actions perceived as targeting political opponents risk eroding public confidence in state institutions.
Presidential Priorities and Campaign Promises
In a recent interview, Arthur also appealed directly to President John Dramani Mahama. He urged the President to prioritize effective governance and concentrate on fulfilling key promises made to Ghanaians during the 2024 election campaign.
Specific pledges mentioned include the proposed 24-hour economy policy, the establishment of a Women’s Bank, and various social intervention programs. Arthur noted that many citizens are still awaiting the implementation of these flagship initiatives.
He stated that the government’s primary responsibility should be to address the economic and social challenges facing citizens. This, he contended, should take precedence over actions that could be interpreted as political intimidation.
“The attention of government must be focused on improving the living conditions of Ghanaians and fulfilling campaign promises instead of creating an atmosphere of fear and political tension,” Arthur stated.
Upholding Democratic Principles
Arthur extended his call to political actors across the spectrum, urging them to uphold democratic principles. He advised against engaging in actions or rhetoric that could threaten national cohesion and stability.
These statements emerge amidst a heightened political debate surrounding the arrest of several opposition figures. NPP supporters accuse the government of selective justice, while government officials maintain that state institutions are operating independently and within legal frameworks.
Future Outlook
The situation highlights ongoing concerns about the relationship between state security agencies and political opposition in Ghana. Observers will be watching closely to see if national institutions heed the call for mediation and if the government addresses the perceived trend of political targeting. The focus on fulfilling campaign promises versus alleged political maneuvering will likely remain a key theme in Ghana’s political discourse leading up to future elections.
