A massive fire destroyed a six-bedroom self-contained house at Atekyem near Universal School in Koforidua, Eastern Region, on Thursday, May 21, 2026. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) received a distress call around 11:14 am and dispatched a crew that arrived to find the property heavily engulfed in flames.
Firefighters Battle Intense Blaze
The fire crew, led by Assistant Divisional Officer Grade I (ADO I) Sagoe, arrived at the scene twelve minutes after the initial call, at 11:26 am. They encountered a building where the fire had already spread extensively from the roof section.
Thick smoke and intense heat presented significant challenges for the firefighters. Their immediate priority was to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to adjacent structures in the densely populated area.
Operation and Salvage Efforts
The GNFS operation to bring the fire under control commenced shortly after their arrival. After a prolonged and intensive effort, the fire was declared under control at 12:21 pm.
Full extinguishment was achieved by 12:57 pm, nearly two hours after the initial distress call. The extensive operation demonstrated the crew’s commitment to fully dousing the flames.
Despite the severe destruction to the building and the loss of most household contents, the firefighters successfully salvaged several important items. These included a tabletop refrigerator, kitchen utensils, a 6kg gas cylinder, plastic storage racks, and wash basins.

The incident resulted in no reported injuries or fatalities, a fact that residents described as miraculous given the ferocity of the fire and the extent of the damage to the six-bedroom house.
