Ghana is preparing to receive its first group of approximately 300 citizens being evacuated from South Africa on Wednesday, May 27, due to escalating xenophobic incidents. The repatriation effort, coordinated by Ghanaian authorities and South African officials, aims to ensure the safety of Ghanaians residing in South Africa who have expressed a desire to return home.
Context of the Evacuations
The evacuation comes in response to renewed reports of xenophobic violence and tensions in various parts of South Africa. These incidents have created an unsafe environment for foreign nationals, including a significant Ghanaian diaspora. The Ghanaian High Commission in South Africa has been actively involved in screening and verifying individuals eligible for return.
Screening and Logistics Underway
Benjamin Quashie, Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, confirmed the details in an interview with DW Africa on Sunday, May 24. He stated that screening exercises are being meticulously managed to ensure all eligible citizens are properly documented before departure. The Home Affairs department in South Africa is facilitating the process, with the first flight scheduled to depart early Wednesday morning.
