At least one person has died and approximately 20 others are feared trapped under the rubble of a nine-storey building that collapsed early Sunday morning in Angeles City, Philippines. The structure, which was still under construction, gave way around 3:00 AM local time, prompting a large-scale search and rescue operation.
Rescue Efforts Underway
Rescue teams have managed to extract 24 individuals from the collapsed building site. Additionally, two people were rescued from a nearby hotel that sustained damage from falling debris. The operation is facing significant challenges due to the sheer volume of concrete and scaffolding that needs to be moved.
City information officer Jay Pelayo described the scene, noting that the building’s walls and surrounding scaffolding buckled, creating a massive pile of debris. “There are big chunks of concrete, and we need equipment to lift them up,” Pelayo stated, highlighting the difficulty rescuers face.
Victims and Investigation
The confirmed fatality is a 65-year-old Malaysian man who was reportedly staying in the adjacent hotel. Philippine fire chief Rico Kwan Tiu informed AFP that the man had communicated with rescuers by phone while pinned, but was found lifeless upon retrieval.
Many of those believed to be trapped are construction workers who were on-site when the building suddenly collapsed. Officials have confirmed five people are trapped, with two of them able to communicate with rescue personnel. The exact cause of the collapse is currently under investigation.
