Emirates Extends Autism-Friendly Travel Initiative to Ghana

Emirates, recognized as the world’s first Autism-Certified Airline, launched its Travel Rehearsal programme in Ghana earlier in March, aiming to enhance the accessibility and inclusivity of air travel for passengers with diverse needs. The initiative, hosted in partnership with the HopeSetters Autism Centre at Accra International Airport, familiarizes individuals on the autism spectrum with airport procedures and onboard environments through a guided simulation.

Familiarizing Travelers with the Airport Journey

The Travel Rehearsal programme provides a comprehensive, step-by-step simulation of the entire air travel process. This includes navigating check-in counters, using imitation boarding passes, and experiencing immigration and security checks. Participants also tour the airport lounge before simulating the arrival process, which encompasses customs and baggage claim.

This carefully orchestrated simulation is designed to reduce travel-related anxiety and build confidence for individuals who may find the typical airport experience overwhelming. By providing a predictable and controlled environment, the programme aims to empower passengers with autism to travel more independently and with greater ease.

Collaboration and Accessibility at Accra International Airport

Emirates’ Airport Services team in Ghana collaborated closely with HopeSetters Autism Centre to tailor the programme. They met with the centre to explain the global initiative and the integral role students and staff would play in the simulation.

The team then meticulously planned the route within Accra International Airport, coordinating with various stakeholders. This ensured that every touchpoint of the simulated journey was as accessible as possible, addressing potential challenges and ensuring a smooth experience for the participants.

Building Confidence and Creating Opportunities

Salem Almana, Emirates’ Country Manager for Ghana, emphasized the broader impact of the initiative. “This initiative is about more than travel. It is about building confidence, creating opportunities, and ensuring that every individual feels welcomed, respected, and supported throughout their journey,” he stated.

Almana highlighted Emirates’ ongoing commitment to making travel more accessible globally. He expressed gratitude to Accra International Airport (ACC) and the HopeSetters Autism Centre for their significant participation, and recognized the Emirates Airport Services team in Ghana for their leadership in bringing this West African debut to fruition.

Partnering for an Inclusive Travel Experience

Mrs. Bridget Jewell Baaba Enchill, Executive Director of HopeSetters Autism Centre, underscored the programme’s importance. “By allowing our students to familiarise themselves with the airport environment in advance, Emirates is helping remove barriers and opening up opportunities for individuals on the autism spectrum to travel with greater confidence and independence,” she said.

Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, Managing Director of Ghana Airports Company Limited, affirmed the airport’s commitment to passenger inclusivity. “Ghana Airports Company Limited is pleased to have provided world-class facilities and services for students with neurodivergence at Accra International Airport,” she noted, reinforcing their dedication to a pleasant travel experience for all passengers.

Emirates’ Global Commitment to Autism Certification

Emirates achieved the distinction of becoming the world’s first Autism-Certified Airline in 2025. This certification followed specialized autism awareness training for over 35,000 cabin crew and ground staff members.

The training equips Emirates employees with a deep understanding of the autism spectrum, common misconceptions, and the specific challenges travelers with autism may face. It also provides strategies for offering personalized support tailored to individual passenger needs, ensuring a more comfortable and understanding travel environment.

Expansion Across Africa and Beyond

The Accra Travel Rehearsal marks the fourth such event Emirates has conducted in Africa, following similar successful programmes in Durban, Harare, and Luanda, all completed in 2025. This expansion demonstrates a growing focus on the African continent for accessible travel solutions.

Since April 2025, Emirates has organized 40 Travel Rehearsal simulations across numerous global airports. These include locations such as Dubai, London, Sydney, Toronto, and many others, showcasing a widespread and consistent effort to implement this accessibility program worldwide.

Future Implications for Accessible Travel

The expansion of Emirates’ Travel Rehearsal programme into Ghana signifies a growing trend towards greater inclusivity within the aviation industry. As more airports and airlines adopt similar initiatives, the travel experience for individuals with autism and other neurodivergent conditions is likely to become significantly more accessible and less stressful.

This proactive approach not only benefits passengers but also sets a benchmark for other travel-related businesses. The focus on pre-travel familiarization and staff training addresses critical pain points, potentially leading to increased travel participation from a wider demographic. The continued rollout of such programs globally will be key to watch as the industry moves towards truly universal accessibility.
