Floods Devastate Twifo Atti-Morkwa District, Claiming Lives and Highlighting Environmental Concerns

Heavy rainfall in Ghana’s Twifo Atti-Morkwa District of the Central Region has led to two separate drowning incidents, tragically claiming the life of a 45-year-old man and leaving a recently graduated Junior High School student missing, as confirmed by local disaster management officials. The body of the man, who disappeared three days prior in Morkwa, was recovered from the Pra River on Monday, June 8, while search efforts continue for the second victim.

Tragic Drownings Amidst Heavy Rains

The first fatal incident involved a 45-year-old man whose body was found in the Pra River after he had been missing for three days in the Morkwa area.

On the same day, Alfred Kumi, a recent Junior High School graduate from Gomoa Ohua in the Gomoa West District, went missing while bathing in the Osen River at Twifo Edugyaa. Alfred had been visiting his father in Twifo Edugyaa, hoping to secure financial assistance for his secondary education following his successful completion of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) last month.

NADMO Confirms Incidents and Issues Warnings

Mr. James Pra, the District Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), confirmed both incidents. He stated that one body had been recovered and that ongoing search operations were focused on locating the second missing individual.

Mr. Pra used the opportunity to strongly caution residents against engaging in illegal sand winning activities along riverbanks. He emphasized that these practices are not only dangerous but are directly contributing to avoidable loss of life in the region’s waterways.
