Tamale, Ghana – A 48-year-old man, Abdallah Mohammed, has received a 15-year prison sentence with hard labour from the Tamale High Court for the defilement of a 14-year-old girl. The court, presided over by Justice Charles Kwesi Acheampong, also handed down an additional six-month sentence for perjury after finding Mohammed guilty of lying under oath during his trial.
Key Dispute Over Victim’s Age
The central point of contention throughout the legal proceedings was the age of the victim. Prosecutors presented evidence and testimony establishing the complainant as 14 years old at the time of the offense. Mohammed, however, maintained that the girl was 18, asserting that her physical appearance and interactions led him to believe she was an adult.

While convicted of defilement and perjury, Abdallah Mohammed was acquitted of a separate charge related to inducing an abortion. The court found that the prosecution had not provided sufficient evidence to establish that Mohammed caused or induced the victim to terminate a pregnancy.
