Hohoe, Ghana – A 27-year-old man, Mohammed Rafiu, has been convicted and sentenced to three years imprisonment by the Hohoe Circuit Court for unlawfully entering the Faith International Ministry Church and stealing musical instruments. The conviction, which occurred on Monday, June 8, 2026, followed Rafiu’s guilty plea to charges of unlawful entry and stealing. He was apprehended on June 5, 2026, after witnesses observed him acting suspiciously with stolen church property.
Context of the Incident
The incident highlights a concerning trend of property crime affecting religious institutions in the region. The Volta North Regional Police Command reported the arrest and subsequent conviction, emphasizing the swift action taken by law enforcement. The stolen items included an amplifier, an equaliser, a mixer, and a cross-over machine, all crucial for the church’s services.
Details of the Arrest and Conviction
According to a statement from Inspector Felix Kwao, Public Relations Officer for the Volta North Regional Police Command, witnesses spotted Rafiu near the church premises carrying a sack. His hurried demeanor and the suspicious load prompted them to intercept him.
Upon inspection, the sack was found to contain the church’s valuable musical equipment. Rafiu was immediately arrested and taken to the Hohoe Police District. There, he confessed to the charges leveled against him.
The Hohoe Circuit Court heard the case on June 8, 2026. Rafiu pleaded guilty to two counts: unlawful entry and stealing. The court handed down sentences of three years for unlawful entry and four years for stealing. Crucially, these sentences are to run concurrently, meaning Rafiu will serve a total of four years in prison, not seven.
Police Appeal for Vigilance
The Volta North Regional Police Command took the opportunity to address the public following the conviction. They urged residents to remain vigilant and to actively cooperate with law enforcement agencies in combating crime.
“The general public is urged to immediately report any suspected criminal activities to the Police for action,” stated Inspector Kwao in the released statement. This call to action aims to foster a stronger community-police partnership in maintaining safety and security.
Implications and Future Outlook
The sentencing of Mohammed Rafiu serves as a deterrent to potential offenders and underscores the commitment of the Hohoe Circuit Court and the Volta North Regional Police Command to addressing property crimes. For religious institutions, this case emphasizes the need for enhanced security measures to protect valuable assets.
Looking ahead, the police’s call for public vigilance suggests an ongoing effort to empower communities in crime prevention. Residents in Hohoe and surrounding areas are encouraged to be observant and to report any suspicious activities promptly, thereby contributing to a safer environment for all.
