NDC Operative Warns Appointees Against Disdain for Grassroots Supporters

An outspoken operative of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), James Agbey, has issued a strong warning to government appointees under the John Mahama administration. Agbey accuses these officials of exhibiting arrogance, disrespect, and disdain towards the party’s grassroots supporters, whom he asserts are the bedrock of the party’s electoral success.

Context: The Role of Grassroots in Party Politics

Political parties often rely heavily on their grassroots membership for mobilization, campaign activities, and voter outreach. These dedicated supporters are frequently the first point of contact with the electorate and play a crucial role in translating party ideology into tangible political results. Historically, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has emphasized the importance of its grassroots base.

Appointees Accused of “Demigod” Behavior

In a press statement, James Agbey articulated his deep frustration with what he perceives as a growing disconnect between party appointees and the very individuals who facilitated their rise to power. He described many appointees as having become “demigods” who treat party footsoldiers with contempt once they assume office.

“As a longstanding operative, active and loyal member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), I am infuriated by the continuous disdainful attitude of government appointees towards NDC grassroots membership and footsoldiers,” Agbey stated.

He emphasized that political appointees owe their positions to the sacrifices and efforts of party activists. Therefore, he argued, these officials should remain accessible and respectful to the grassroots membership.

Challenging the “Serving Ghana, Not Footsoldiers” Narrative

Agbey specifically challenged the notion that appointees are solely in office to serve the nation and not the party faithful. He labeled such assertions as “arrogance beyond belief,” asserting that the party’s success is intrinsically linked to the dedication of its members.

“Therefore, the assertion by some of these appointees that they are in office to serve Ghana and not NDC footsoldiers is arrogance beyond belief,” he declared.

Specific Accusations and Warnings

The operative singled out Kwesi Afrey Biney, the boss of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), accusing him of repeatedly turning away party supporters. Agbey questioned Biney’s position, highlighting that such an appointment would not have been possible if the NDC remained in opposition.

“Who told this ingrate that he would be serving as SSNIT boss if NDC was still languishing in opposition?” he questioned.

According to Agbey, some appointees have forgotten the vital role grassroots members played in returning the party to power. He accused them of now “feeding fat on the sweat of ordinary party people.”

Potential Repercussions for the Party

Mr. Agbey warned that the growing frustration and disillusionment among party supporters could significantly damage the image of both the government and the NDC if this attitude persists. He stressed the urgency of addressing the issue.

“The arrogance and disdain must stop, and it must stop now,” he urged.

Echoing Presidential Directives

Agbey invoked President John Mahama’s inaugural message from January 7, 2025, where the President cautioned against disrespect and arrogance within his administration. He urged appointees to heed these presidential directives.

“President Mahama’s message on his investiture was clear: ‘I’ll not tolerate disrespect and arrogance in my government,'” Agbey noted, implying that the current behavior of some appointees contradicts these pronouncements.

Call for Humility and Openness

He further urged appointees to embrace humility, tolerance, and openness in their interactions with the public and party faithful. Agbey stressed that the grassroots deserves a respectful reception at all times.

“By every standard of civility, culture, and political hierarchy, the grassroots deserves a respectful and dignified reception whenever they call on any of President Mahama’s appointees,” he said.

Encouraging Open Dialogue and Accountability

The NDC operative concluded by encouraging party loyalists to speak up against what he described as “dangerous intolerance” within government circles. This call to action suggests a desire for greater accountability and a more inclusive approach from party leadership.

Looking Ahead: Grassroots Engagement and Party Cohesion

The sentiments expressed by James Agbey highlight a critical challenge facing many political parties: maintaining a strong connection between leadership and the grassroots. The coming months will likely see increased scrutiny on how President Mahama’s appointees engage with party members. The NDC’s ability to foster a culture of respect and accessibility among its officials could prove vital for long-term party cohesion and electoral success. Observers will be watching to see if these warnings lead to tangible changes in the behavior of government appointees and if the party leadership addresses these concerns proactively.
