Over 200 residents in the South Tongu District have received poultry birds as part of the Government’s flagship Nkoko Nkitinkiti Initiative, also known locally as the Koklovi Programme. The distribution, which took place at separate ceremonies in Akato and Sogakope, aims to boost local poultry production, create employment, and enhance household incomes. The initiative is a key government strategy to reduce reliance on imported poultry products and bolster food security.
Boosting Local Poultry Production
The Nkoko Nkitinkiti Initiative is designed to revitalize Ghana’s poultry sector. By providing beneficiaries with birds, the government intends to increase domestic egg and poultry meat production. This aligns with national goals to become a major producer and exporter of poultry products within the West African region.
Beneficiaries, selected from five traditional areas within the district, were allocated 35 birds each. Initially, the program aimed to distribute 50 birds per recipient. However, the number was adjusted due to a higher number of beneficiaries and some losses among the 10,000 birds supplied to the district and housed at Shallom Poultry Farms Limited.
Economic Empowerment and Livelihood Enhancement
The programme is specifically targeted at empowering individuals, particularly the youth, to engage in commercial poultry farming. District Chief Executive (DCE) for South Tongu, Mrs. Victoria Dzeklo, emphasized the importance of proper management and care for the birds. She urged beneficiaries to nurture them effectively to maximize economic returns and ensure the initiative’s success.
