Following the evacuation of 300 Ghanaians from South Africa amid escalating xenophobic attacks, Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh, the Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, is urging for robust diplomatic action and justice for victims, stating that repatriation alone is insufficient.
Calls for Stronger Diplomatic Stance
The recent wave of xenophobic violence in South Africa, which has targeted foreign nationals, has prompted a strong reaction from Ghanaian lawmakers. Speaking after the arrival of evacuated citizens, Mr. Ayeh emphasized that these recurring attacks demand more than just humanitarian responses like evacuation.
He argued that African leaders and the African Union must adopt decisive measures to address the root causes and consequences of such violence. Mr. Ayeh expressed that the situation has reached a critical point where it can no longer be treated as a mere diplomatic concern.
