Dr. Kobbina Tuyee Awuah, Chief Executive Officer of Crown Peak Holdings and operator of the Pinkberry franchise, recently revealed a significant career shift, disclosing that he once turned down an opportunity with NASA despite a lifelong aspiration to work in aerospace engineering. The revelation came during an appearance on The Career Trail programme, aired on Joy Learning TV and Joy News.
Early Ambitions in Aerospace
Dr. Awuah shared that his passion for space and engineering began at a young age, directly influencing his early educational choices. He pursued a science track at Opoku Ware School with the express goal of working for NASA.
“I wanted to work for NASA. It was like a dream for me,” he stated during the program.
Academic Foundation at Cornell
His academic journey led him to the United States, where he enrolled at Cornell University, recognized as one of the world’s premier engineering institutions. He completed both his undergraduate and master’s degrees in an accelerated five-year program.
During his studies, Dr. Awuah secured an internship directly connected to NASA. He also gained experience working in advanced research settings, including at Brookhaven National Laboratory.
“I actually got an internship with NASA in my third year,” he disclosed.
Re-evaluation and a New Direction
However, this hands-on experience with a dream opportunity prompted a period of introspection. Dr. Awuah realized that a career in aerospace engineering was not his ultimate vocational calling.
“I think it dawned on me that this was not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life,” he explained. This realization came despite years of dedicated pursuit and investment in his aerospace ambitions.
Transition to the Workforce
Facing this crossroads, Dr. Awuah simultaneously applied for both employment and PhD programs. Ultimately, he opted to enter the professional workforce immediately after graduation.
“So I tried both. I applied for jobs and PhD programmes; I got into a few, but then I decided to work,” he recalled. His first role was as a petroleum and reliability engineer for an oil company based in New Jersey.
This position offered significant international exposure, with Dr. Awuah traveling to various countries, including Brazil and Norway.

Dr. Awuah’s career trajectory highlights the importance of continuous self-assessment throughout one’s professional life. His decision underscores that even deeply held childhood dreams may evolve, and that pivoting towards a different path can lead to unexpected opportunities and fulfillment.
