Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo confirmed that authorities are prioritizing the rescue of individuals trapped beneath the rubble of a collapsed building in Accra’s North Industrial Area following the deployment of excavators. The incident, which occurred around 4:25 a.m. on Sunday, June 7, prompted an immediate emergency response from the Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Police Service, and Ghana Armed Forces.
Rescue Operation Underway
Heavy-duty excavators have arrived at the scene, significantly boosting the capacity of emergency responders to clear debris and reach those potentially trapped. Minister Ocloo stated that the primary objective is to expedite the safe extraction of victims. “Our priority is to get people out as quickly as possible,” she emphasized to media present at the location.
The arrival of the heavy machinery was met with anticipation, with the Minister acknowledging concerns about any perceived delays. While unable to pinpoint the exact cause for the equipment’s delayed deployment, she suggested possible factors such as operator availability or adverse weather conditions. “Honestly speaking, I don’t know why the delay. Perhaps they were waiting for the operator or perhaps because it was raining. I don’t want to blame anybody because we are human,” Ocloo remarked.
A comprehensive security and emergency presence remains mobilized at the site. “We have the men here. The military is here. The police is here. Everybody is also here. We have all the security apparatus here,” she assured the public. Authorities expressed cautious optimism regarding the safety of those still unaccounted for beneath the collapsed structure.
Addressing Building Collapses
The incident has reignited concerns about the recurring issue of building collapses in Accra. In response, Minister Ocloo indicated that a team of engineers is actively investigating the structural integrity of buildings in the area and will provide recommendations. “The engineers are working on it. They will give us feedback and advice on the way forward so that together we can comply with the necessary measures,” she stated.
This proactive assessment aims to prevent future occurrences by identifying and rectifying potential safety hazards within the construction sector. The Ministry is committed to implementing stricter building regulations and enforcement mechanisms based on the engineers’ findings.
Looking Ahead
The successful rescue of individuals trapped in the North Industrial Area collapse remains the immediate focus. Concurrently, the findings from the ongoing engineering assessments will be crucial in shaping future construction practices and safety standards in Accra. The public will be closely watching for the implementation of these recommendations to ensure greater building safety across the city.
