The UN June Climate Meetings opened in Bonn, Germany, this week with Ghana, representing the African Group of Negotiators (AGN), calling for a more responsive and equitable climate process focused on implementation. The 64th Session of the Subsidiary Bodies (SB64) under the UNFCCC is setting the agenda for the upcoming COP31 in Antalya, Türkiye.
Context: The Bonn Climate Talks
These annual meetings in Bonn serve as a crucial preparatory stage for the larger UN Climate Change Conferences of the Parties (COP). Held at the World Conference Center Bonn, SB64 runs for 10 days, concluding on June 18th. Over 7,000 participants, including national government negotiators, civil society observers, and industry leaders, gather to shape the global climate agenda.
Africa’s Urgent Plea for Adaptation and Finance
Nana Dr. Antwi-Boasiako Amoah, Chair of the AGN, delivered a strong statement highlighting Africa’s vulnerability to escalating climate risks. He expressed deep concern over the potential return of El Niño conditions, citing a World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warning of an 80% likelihood of El Niño from June to August 2026, with probabilities remaining high through November.
