Four individuals were confirmed dead following a catastrophic head-on collision between a Hyundai truck and a Man Diesel trailer at Anyinasin Junction on Wednesday, May 6, 2026. The intense impact ignited a fierce fire, consuming both vehicles and trapping occupants.
Collision Details Emerge
The fatal incident involved a Hyundai Mighty truck, registered as GE 1913-16, traveling from Asamankese towards Bunso. It collided head-on with a Man Diesel trailer (GS 236-12) en route from Kumasi to Accra. This information was detailed in a statement released by the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in the Eastern Region.
Eyewitness accounts suggest the trailer veered into the path of the oncoming Hyundai truck. The force of the collision propelled the truck off the road and into a nearby bush, according to the GNFS statement.
Fire Service Response
The collision triggered a rapid and intense fire that quickly engulfed both heavy vehicles. The Ghana National Fire Service received an emergency call at 05:49 hrs. Firefighters arrived at the scene by 06:00 hrs, but the blaze had already reached a fully developed stage.
Firefighting efforts commenced immediately, bringing the fire under control by 06:25 hrs and fully extinguishing it by 06:50 hrs. Tragically, four occupants who were inside the Hyundai truck were burnt beyond recognition and could not be saved.
Survivor Accounts and Recovery
Before the fire service’s arrival, bystanders managed to rescue one female victim from the wreckage. She is currently receiving medical attention at the Akim Asafo Health Centre. The three occupants of the Man Diesel trailer reportedly escaped the fiery crash unhurt.
“The four (4) badly charred bodies in the Hyundai truck were recovered by firefighters and handed over to the Police for preservation and further investigation,” the statement confirmed. The exact cause of the crash and the subsequent fire remains under active investigation by the authorities.
Road Safety Concerns
The GNFS commended its personnel for their swift and dedicated response to the emergency. The service used the incident to reiterate its plea to motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads. Adherence to all traffic and road safety regulations is crucial to prevent similar devastating tragedies.
Broader Implications and Future Outlook
This incident highlights the persistent dangers on Ghana’s roadways, particularly concerning heavy vehicle traffic and potential driver error. The Anyinasin Junction area, like many accident-prone zones, will likely face increased scrutiny regarding traffic management and enforcement.
The investigation’s findings will be critical in determining whether mechanical failure, driver fatigue, or other factors contributed to the crash. Such information could lead to targeted safety campaigns or regulatory adjustments for commercial vehicle operators.
The focus now shifts to the ongoing investigation and the measures authorities might implement to enhance road safety, especially on inter-city routes. Motorists are urged to remain vigilant and prioritize safe driving practices, as the recovery and identification processes for the victims commence.
