AfriCAN Event Unites Toronto’s African Diaspora for Culture and Community

Toronto, ON – Last evening, Giants of Africa, the non-profit organization co-founded by Masai Ujiri, President and Alternate Governor of the Dallas Mavericks, hosted the third annual AfriCAN event. The gathering at Steam Whistle Brewery Event Space brought together Toronto’s vibrant African diaspora to celebrate culture, creativity, and community.

Fostering Connection and Cultural Pride

The event, presented by TD with supporting partner Wellington Advocacy, was titled ‘AfriCAN: Advancing Africa Together’. Its primary objective was to cultivate a community that facilitates the sharing of knowledge and resources while simultaneously fostering African pride and cultural celebration.

A central highlight of the evening was an engaging fireside chat. Masai Ujiri shared the stage with actor, investor, and philanthropist Boris Kodjoe, alongside comedian, entertainer, and philanthropist Michael Blackson. The discussion offered insights into their experiences and perspectives.

A Celebration of Arts and Cuisine

Beyond the featured speakers, AfriCAN showcased a diverse range of cultural expressions. Attendees enjoyed live comedy from emerging Canadian talent Hassan Phills. A bustling cultural marketplace offered a platform for African designers to display their unique creations.

The culinary arts were also prominently featured. Acclaimed chefs Rachel Adjei, Victor Ugwueke, and Bashir Munye curated a selection of dishes, providing guests with an authentic taste of African flavors.

Giants of Africa’s Vision

Masai Ujiri emphasized the event’s alignment with his organization’s mission. “AfriCAN embodies everything Giants of Africa stands for—bringing people together, celebrating our culture, and lifting each other up,” Ujiri stated. He added, “When we gather as a community with purpose and pride, incredible things happen. It reminds us of the power we hold when we stay connected, invest in each other, and believe in what we can build together.
