The North East Region of Ghana has officially launched its phase of the national ‘One Million Coders Programme’ with the reception of 200 computers. The initiative, aimed at equipping the youth with vital digital skills, received a significant boost with this donation, marking a key step in expanding technology education across the region.
Context: Bridging the Digital Divide
The ‘One Million Coders Programme’ is a government-led initiative designed to address the growing demand for digital literacy and technological expertise in Ghana. In an increasingly digital global economy, the program seeks to ensure that young Ghanaians are not left behind, providing them with the skills necessary for future employment and innovation.
This rollout in the North East Region is particularly crucial for bridging the digital divide, providing access to technology and training in areas that may historically have had less exposure to advanced IT education.
Programme Rollout and Beneficiary Districts
The 200 computers were formally presented by Ndamba Yakubu Ridwan, the Regional Coordinator for the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC). He handed them over to the North East Regional Minister, who will oversee their distribution to four Municipal and District Assemblies (MDAs).
The selected beneficiary districts are the East Mamprusi Municipality, Bunkpurugu-Nakpanduri District, Yunyoo-Nasuan District, and Chereponi District. These areas will serve as the initial hubs for the programme’s activities in the region.
Training Modalities and Future Expansion
The computers will serve as the primary tools for training young individuals in coding, general digital literacy, and various aspects of information technology. Mr. Ridwan emphasized that the programme is a national effort to prepare the youth for a technology-driven job market.
He encouraged all interested young people to apply online for the programme, highlighting its potential to significantly enhance their career prospects. “Any person who is interested in enrolling in the One Million Coders Programme can go online, apply, and be part of this skills training. This will go a long way to help them, so the youth should take it seriously and enrol,” stated Mr. Ridwan.
Training delivery will vary across the districts. Participants in the East Mamprusi Municipality will have direct physical access to facilitators. In contrast, individuals in the Bunkpurugu-Nakpanduri, Yunyoo-Nasuan, and Chereponi districts will receive their training online at designated community centres.
Looking ahead, Mr. Ridwan indicated that the programme’s reach is set to expand. The next phase will include the West Mamprusi Municipality and the Mamprugu Moagduri Districts. He urged the youth in these areas to be patient as plans are finalized for their inclusion.
Regional Minister’s Call to Action
The North East Regional Minister lauded GIFEC and the government for the initiative, recognizing it as a vital step towards reducing the digital gap and creating new opportunities for the region’s youth. He stressed the importance of effective utilization of the donated computers.
The Minister urged the beneficiary assemblies to ensure the computers are used optimally for training and to lay a strong foundation for digital transformation within their communities. He specifically directed the Municipal and District Chief Executives to collaborate closely with programme coordinators.
A key directive was the implementation of robust security measures to protect the valuable equipment. “Let us take serious steps to safeguard the centres and the computers so that our children will benefit from them,” the Minister urged, ensuring the longevity and accessibility of the training resources.
Empowering the Next Generation
The ‘One Million Coders Programme’ aims to empower thousands of young Ghanaians by equipping them with practical coding and ICT skills. This program is poised to position them more favorably within the rapidly expanding digital economy, fostering a new generation of tech-savvy professionals.
The distribution of these computers is expected to empower thousands of young Ghanaians with practical coding and ICT skills, positioning them for greater opportunities in the growing digital economy.
