ECG Revives Key Kumasi Power Projects to Enhance Supply Stability

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Limited has revitalized two critical, previously stalled projects in Kumasi aimed at significantly improving the quality and stability of electricity supply for residents. This initiative addresses long-standing capacity constraints and aims to resolve frequent power outages and voltage issues plaguing the region.

Addressing Infrastructure Bottlenecks

The revival of these projects was announced by Mr. Kwame Kpekpena, the Managing Director of ECG, during a working visit to the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene. The visit served as an update on ECG’s ongoing system upgrading efforts in the Ashanti Region.

Two primary projects are now back on track: the construction of a vital link from the Anwomaso Bulk Supply Point (BSP) to Kaase, and the development of a link from the Ridge Bulk Supply Point to the Neoplan Primary Substation, ultimately connecting to Barekese. These projects were initiated to tackle capacity limitations at substations and feeders, which have been identified as the root cause of power supply challenges.

Project Scope and Purpose

The Anwomaso BSP to Kaase link was originally designed to deliver power capacity directly to the heart of Kumasi, with a completion target of 2023. Its revival promises to streamline power distribution to the central business areas.

Concurrently, the Ridge BSP to Neoplan Primary Substation to Barekese project is crucial for ensuring a consistent and stable power supply to the Barekese Dam. This reliable power is essential for the continuous treatment of water, thereby guaranteeing a steady supply of potable water to the region’s population.

Overcoming Funding Hurdles

Mr. Kpekpena explained that both projects experienced significant delays due to a lack of funding. “We initiated projects, some of which were to be completed a long time ago, but they were stalled because of unavailable funds,” he stated.

The government has since allocated the necessary funds to resume and complete these critical infrastructure developments. In addition to direct government funding, ECG is dedicating three percent of all revenue collected through its Cash Waterfall system to support the completion of its projects across the country.

Accelerated Timelines and Additional Upgrades

The ECG is optimistic about the accelerated progress. Mr. Kpekpena assured that the Anwomaso BSP to Kaase link project is expected to be completed within the next six to eight weeks. This swift timeline indicates a focused effort to bring immediate relief to power supply issues in the Kaase area.

Beyond the revived projects, ECG is undertaking further upgrades. The Ridge BSP transformer is slated for replacement as it has surpassed its operational load capacity. New, larger transformers are anticipated to be installed by the end of May.

Furthermore, the entire switchboard at the Ridge BSP will be replaced. To expedite this process, ECG plans to import key components, including switchgear, to enhance capacity even before the full replacement is finalized.

Regional Minister’s Support and Call for Communication

Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, commended ECG’s management for their dedication to improving power supply. He emphasized the importance of transparent communication regarding ECG’s projects and planned maintenance activities.

“This would help minimise the circulation of false narratives concerning ECG’s motive to sabotage the good performance of the government,” Dr. Amoakohene urged, highlighting the need for public awareness to prevent misinformation and build trust.

Future Outlook

The successful completion of these revived and new projects is expected to significantly bolster ECG’s system capacity in the Ashanti Region. Residents and businesses can anticipate more reliable and stable power, which is crucial for economic activity and daily life. The ongoing investment in infrastructure underscores ECG’s commitment to modernizing its network and meeting the growing demand for electricity. Stakeholders will be watching closely for the timely completion of these projects and their impact on reducing power outages and voltage fluctuations throughout Kumasi and surrounding areas.
