MTN Ghana Marks 30 Years with Renewed Digital Transformation Push

MTN Ghana officially launched its 30th-anniversary celebrations in Accra, reaffirming its commitment to Ghana’s digital transformation and expressing gratitude to its customers and stakeholders. Themed “30 Years of Progress, Powered by You,” the event highlighted the company’s evolution from a telecommunications provider to a key driver of economic growth and digital inclusion in the country over the past three decades.

A Ghanaian Story of Connectivity and Progress

MTN Ghana CEO Stephen Blewett emphasized that the company’s 30-year journey is fundamentally a “Ghanaian story.” He described how millions of customers have shaped the company’s trajectory, transforming lives through enhanced connectivity. Blewett noted that MTN is perceived by many Ghanaians not as a distant corporation, but as a shared national platform and an enabler of opportunities.

He traced the company’s evolution from launching GSM services in 1996 to the significant impact of Mobile Money (MoMo), introduced in 2009. MoMo has become a vital tool for economic inclusion, empowering millions, particularly in households, small businesses, and the informal sector.

“Today, millions of Ghanaians rely on Mobile Money every day. It supports households, businesses, agents and entire value chains. It is deeply woven into the fabric of Ghana’s economy and daily life,” Blewett stated.

Blewett also acknowledged MTN’s critical role during the COVID-19 pandemic, where reliable connectivity proved essential for businesses, education, healthcare, and families to function. He stressed that by then, connectivity had become essential national infrastructure.

Economic Contributions and Future Investments

MTN Ghana has consistently been a significant taxpayer and investor in network expansion and digital infrastructure. The MTN Ghana Foundation has invested millions of cedis in education, healthcare, skills training, and economic empowerment initiatives nationwide.

Looking forward, Blewett outlined MTN’s strategy to support Ghana’s next phase of development, driven by digital innovation and youth creativity. The company is strengthening its fiber infrastructure, modernizing core systems, and preparing for advanced technologies.

Sustainability, responsible technology use, and investments in renewable energy are central to MTN’s long-term strategy.

Government Endorsement and Digital Economy Vision

Samuel Nartey George, Ghana’s Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, lauded MTN Ghana’s transformative role in the nation’s telecommunications and digital economy. He presented MTN as a model of positive, long-term foreign direct investment, citing its consistent confidence in Ghana’s future through sustained investment and innovation.

The Minister highlighted MTN’s recent announcement of a US$1 billion investment in nationwide network infrastructure as a strong vote of confidence in Ghana’s economic and digital future. He echoed the importance of Mobile Money as a key tool for financial inclusion, especially for women, informal traders, SMEs, and young entrepreneurs.

George emphasized the collaborative efforts between government, regulators, and private sector players in liberalizing and strengthening Ghana’s telecommunications sector. He also acknowledged MTN’s substantial contributions to domestic revenue, employment, and enterprise development through its extensive ecosystem.

Addressing Future Challenges and Opportunities

While celebrating industry achievements, the Minister underscored the need for continued collaboration to tackle emerging challenges. These include ensuring affordable internet access, enhancing cybersecurity, developing digital skills, protecting infrastructure, and promoting environmental sustainability.

He also pointed to future opportunities in 5G technology, artificial intelligence, cloud services, data analytics, and the Internet of Things (IoT) as technologies poised to redefine productivity and public service delivery in Ghana.

“Government will continue to work with the broader industry to unlock these opportunities in ways that are inclusive, secure and sustainable,” George assured.

Looking Ahead: A Future of Digital Opportunity

The anniversary launch brought together key stakeholders, policymakers, regulators, media, and MTN employees to commemorate a shared journey of progress and empowerment. MTN Ghana plans a series of activities to celebrate customers, deepen community impact, and reinforce its commitment to Ghana’s digital and socio-economic advancement.

With 30 years of operations, MTN Ghana’s vision remains focused on leveraging technology to expand opportunities, empower individuals, and position Ghana competitively in the global digital economy.
