Security forces in Nkwanta, Oti Region, apprehended two individuals and seized a significant quantity of ammunition during two distinct operations on May 17, 2026. The seizures, involving live cartridges, highlight ongoing efforts to curb illicit arms trafficking in the area.
First Interception: Bus Search Uncovers Cartridges
The initial operation occurred at a security checkpoint in Nkwanta. Personnel intercepted a 66-seater MGI bus, identified by its registration number AS 248-P.
A thorough search of the vehicle revealed a black polythene bag containing three brown boxes. Each box was packed with 250 rounds of J/G cartridges, totaling 750 live rounds.
During preliminary interrogation, the driver’s mate, identified as 53-year-old Hudu Mahama, claimed ownership of the seized ammunition.
Second Operation: Motorbike Pursuit Leads to Arrest
Later the same day, a joint Police and Military team conducted a separate operation. This operation resulted in the retrieval of another cache of ammunition.
The ammunition, consisting of 125 AA cartridges and 125 BB cartridges, was found in a box that reportedly fell from a suspect’s motorbike during a pursuit.
The rider of the motorbike managed to evade capture, escaping with a second box of ammunition, according to a statement from the Oti Regional Police Headquarters.
Following preliminary investigations, a second suspect, 57-year-old Christian Kwasi Alonise, was arrested.
Ongoing Investigations and Security Commitment
Both Hudu Mahama and Christian Kwasi Alonise are currently in police custody, assisting with ongoing investigations into the source and intended destination of the ammunition.
Authorities are actively pursuing leads to locate the fleeing rider and recover the missing box of ammunition.
