Five houses and nine vehicles were buried in a devastating mudslide carrying heavy rocks from the 600-meter Adaklu Mountain at Adaklu-Helekpe in Ghana’s Volta Region on the evening of Wednesday, May 20, 2026. The incident occurred shortly after 6:00 p.m. during a heavy downpour, though swift action by residents led to the rescue of two individuals trapped in the debris before emergency services arrived. Approximately 50 goats and other livestock perished in the disaster.
Community Recovers After Mudslide Devastation
Residents of Adaklu-Helekpe are grappling with the aftermath of a significant mudslide that swept through their community. The torrent of mud and rocks, originating from the imposing Adaklu Mountain, inundated a large area, engulfing homes and vehicles. The sheer force of the slide left a trail of destruction across several acres of land.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed that while no lives were lost, the damage to property is substantial. Assistant Chief Fire Officer Joseph Tetteh Freeman, the Volta Regional Commander of the GNFS, was at the scene and immediately ordered an evacuation of residents living near the affected zone. They have been advised to stay away for at least one week.
