Award-winning Nigerian investigative journalist David Hundeyin is set to release a new documentary, “What Happened on October 29?”, which scrutinizes the international media’s coverage of the violence that erupted following Tanzania’s October 2025 General Election. The film aims to present a more comprehensive account of the unrest that followed the ruling CCM party’s victory, arguing that key aspects were overlooked or inadequately explored by global news organizations.
The documentary delves into the events that transpired after the election, where the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party, led by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, was declared the winner. Hundeyin, currently based in Ghana, has spent months investigating the incidents, a process that included interviewing individuals both within and outside Tanzania.
His research also involved a thorough review of local and foreign media reports, alongside an analysis of findings from the Commission of Inquiry chaired by retired Chief Justice Mohamed Chande Othman. This extensive work forms the basis of the documentary’s narrative.
Hundeyin asserts that his documentary will present evidence suggesting the violence was not spontaneous but rather organized, involving both domestic and external actors. He contends that the international narrative failed to capture the full political complexity and the broader context behind the unrest.
“The story that was told to the world was a simple one, but the truth is far more complex,” Hundeyin stated. “There were other actors involved, and other agendas at play.” This perspective challenges the widely reported accounts and suggests a more intricate web of influence and motivation.
