A gunman identified as Nasire Best, who had previously encountered the Secret Service on multiple occasions, was fatally shot by agents Saturday evening after firing shots outside the White House. The incident, which occurred around 6:00 PM EST, injured a bystander and prompted a swift response from law enforcement. President Donald Trump was at the White House but was not harmed, and no protectees or operations were affected.
The suspect, Nasire Best of Dundalk, Maryland, had a documented history of interactions with the Secret Service at the White House perimeter. Court documents reveal a June 2025 incident where Best obstructed an entry lane and claimed to be Jesus Christ. He was subsequently sent for a mental evaluation.
Despite this evaluation, Best again attempted to access the White House in July 2025. Following this second incident, he was arrested by Secret Service agents and charged with unlawfully entering a federally controlled property. Although arraigned on the charge, he failed to appear for a status hearing in August 2025, resulting in a no-bond bench warrant.
The shooting on Saturday occurred less than a year after the warrant was issued. Best allegedly began firing at a Secret Service checkpoint located at the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. Uniformed Secret Service officers stationed at the corner returned fire, striking Best. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
A bystander sustained injuries during the exchange of gunfire. The Secret Service has not released further details regarding the bystander’s condition. No Secret Service officers were injured in the incident.
