Residents of Tetegu and other flood-affected communities within the Weija-Gbawe municipality are accusing Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) of a critical communication failure, claiming that established warning systems were not activated prior to the recent dam spillage. This alleged oversight, residents contend, significantly exacerbated the scale of destruction and displacement experienced over the past few days.
Rising Waters and Unheeded Warnings
According to Mawuenyega Atukpa, the Assembly Member for the Tetegu electoral area, community leaders observed rising water levels in the dam days before the spillage. Concerns were raised with GWCL officials, who reportedly assured them that any spillage would be carefully managed and potentially limited if rainfall ceased.
