Italian authorities in Reggio Emilia have canceled scheduled July concerts by American artists Kanye West (now known as Ye) and Travis Scott, citing significant public order and security concerns. The decision, announced Friday by Prefect Salvatore Angieri, followed a request from the local Jewish community to cancel West’s performance, highlighting broader issues stemming from the rapper’s past controversial statements.
Context of the Cancellations
The request from the local Jewish community urged officials to replace West’s show with a performance that would emphasize music’s role as a unifying force. This plea came in the wake of West’s history of antisemitic, racist, and pro-Nazi remarks, which have led to similar bans and cancellations internationally, including being barred from entering the UK.
The two concerts were slated to take place on July 17 and 18 at Reggio Emilia’s RFC Arena. West was expected to perform alongside Scott and other artists like The Chainsmokers, Rita Ora, and Swedish House Mafia. The proximity of the two large-scale events and the anticipated crowds were cited as contributing factors to the prefecture’s decision.

Beyond West’s controversial statements, Travis Scott’s inclusion also raised flags due to the tragic events at his 2021 Astroworld Festival in Houston, Texas.
