The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Council of Elders has issued a definitive warning to party members, ordering an immediate halt to all premature presidential campaign activities. This directive, aimed at curbing internal factionalism and maintaining focus on governance, was announced following an emergency meeting with President John Mahama on Friday, May 29, 2026. The council expressed grave concern over early, well-funded campaign efforts that threaten to undermine party unity and distract from the government’s core priorities.
Reinforcing Party Unity and Governance Focus
The emergency consultative meeting convened by the Council of Elders with President Mahama prioritized reinforcing party unity and enforcing strict internal discipline. A key objective was to mobilize maximum grassroots support for the government’s flagship “Resetting Agenda.” The council noted operational reports detailing early and well-funded campaign activities by certain individuals and interest groups within the NDC.
These premature activities, the council warned, are capable of undermining party cohesion. They also pose a significant risk of dangerously distracting the state from its essential governance priorities. The elders emphasized that the party’s primary mandate at this juncture is to deliver tangible development to the people of Ghana.
Channelling Resources Towards National Development
In a strongly worded communique released after the high-stakes meeting, the council urged all ambitious members to redirect their energies and financial resources. The directive calls for these resources to be channeled into supporting the government’s structural development agenda.
