Spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu, has strongly cautioned Ghana’s major political parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), against transforming the contentious anti-LGBTQ+ bill into a partisan political issue. The Islamic scholar voiced disappointment on Tuesday over the resurgent political disagreements surrounding the legislation, asserting that a broad national consensus on the matter has already been achieved.
Sheikh Shaibu’s remarks come in the wake of renewed debate concerning the bill’s legislative path. This resurgence was partly fueled by recent statements from President John Mahama during a visit to Chatham House in London, where he emphasized the necessity of adhering to proper constitutional and legislative procedures before any bill reaches his desk for assent. Additionally, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin suggested that both parliamentary sides might need to revisit the legislation before it advances further.
However, Sheikh Shaibu contended that the bill has already undergone extensive national deliberation and should not be reopened for political contestation. He stated,
