Ghana High Commission Facilitates Second Wave of Voluntary Evacuations from South Africa

The Ghana High Commission in South Africa has finalized the list of Ghanaian nationals approved for the second phase of a voluntary repatriation exercise, with flights scheduled to depart on Sunday, June 7, 2026. This move follows a temporary halt in new registrations to process a significant influx of applications from citizens wishing to return home.

Pre-Departure Formalities Announced

In a formal notice to the Ghanaian diaspora in South Africa, the High Commission detailed the requirements for those whose applications have been successful. Approved evacuees must report to the High Commission on the evening of Saturday, June 6, 2026. This gathering is crucial for verification, a pre-departure briefing, and completion of other necessary administrative procedures.

The mission is also appealing to individuals on the approved list who have decided not to travel. They are urged to inform the High Commission by noon on Thursday, June 4, 2026. This notification is important to allow another eligible applicant to be accommodated within the limited travel slots.

Travel Regulations and Documentation

Specific guidelines regarding baggage have also been issued. Each traveler is permitted two checked bags, with a strict weight limit of 23 kilograms per item. Any bags exceeding this weight will not be accepted for transport.

Special attention is directed towards parents and guardians traveling with children. They must ensure all requisite travel documentation is in order. This includes, but is not limited to, consent letters where applicable, Road-to-Health cards, and child weighing cards.

For individuals issued with Emergency Travel Certificates (ETCs), these documents will be provided at the airport on the day of departure. This streamlined process aims to ease the administrative burden on evacuees.

Ongoing Evacuation Efforts

The voluntary evacuation exercise is a collaborative effort coordinated by Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria. Working alongside relevant authorities, the commission continues its mission to facilitate the safe return of Ghanaian nationals who have expressed a desire to leave South Africa. The exercise underscores the commission’s commitment to supporting its citizens abroad during challenging circumstances.

Looking Ahead

The successful execution of this second phase will likely pave the way for further repatriation efforts if the demand persists. Attention will be focused on the efficiency of the departure process and the number of individuals successfully repatriated. Future announcements may detail the criteria for subsequent evacuation phases and any adjustments to travel regulations based on lessons learned from these initial operations.
