Konongo, Ghana – A swift response by the Konongo-Odumasi Fire Station on Thursday night, June 4, 2026, saw firefighters meticulously cut through a severely mangled taxicab to rescue a trapped passenger following a head-on collision with an Intercity STC bus. The near-fatal accident occurred along the main highway at Konongo Akrantiebesa, near the Next Bon Gas Filling Station.
The collision involved a cross-regional Intercity STC coach and a compact Kia Picanto taxi. The impact left both vehicles extensively damaged, with the taxi suffering catastrophic structural compromise. Its engine compartment was crushed into the passenger cabin, trapping one occupant.
Before emergency services arrived, bystanders and local drivers initiated immediate rescue efforts. They successfully extricated three individuals who sustained significant injuries, transporting them to the nearby Steward Hospital via passing vehicles for urgent medical attention.
However, a fourth passenger remained trapped inside the taxi, with their lower limbs pinned by the crushed dashboard and chassis. A distress call brought a Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) rescue crew from the Konongo-Odumasi detachment to the scene.
Equipped with hydraulic cutters and spreaders, the firefighters worked diligently under floodlights. They carefully dismantled the mangled steel of the taxi, a process described as a textbook extrication, to safely free the trapped victim.
Once freed, the victim received immediate advanced medical care from the emergency crew and was swiftly transported to Asante Akyem Central Hospital for specialized orthopaedic treatment. Officials from the GNFS confirmed that four individuals sustained injuries in total, but remarkably, no fatalities were reported at the accident site.
The accident caused temporary traffic disruptions on the busy highway. Firefighters also managed the scene by clearing leaking oil, shattered glass, and debris to mitigate risks, especially given the proximity to the gas filling station.
The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has impounded the damaged vehicles. Investigations are underway to ascertain the precise cause of the collision.
