Western Region Teachers Suspend Strike After Government Assurances on Assault Case

Three teacher unions in the Western Region have suspended their industrial action, which began in solidarity with teachers assaulted at Adiewoso M/A Basic School. The decision, effective Monday, June 8, 2026, follows a meeting on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, between union leadership and the Western Regional Minister, who provided assurances and pledged support for the affected educators.

Background to the Strike

The industrial action was initiated by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana (CCT-GH). This collective action was a response to the alleged assault of three teachers and the husband of one teacher by armed military personnel at the Adiewoso M/A Basic School on April 30, 2026.

Initially, the unions organized a sit-down strike, requiring teachers to remain in schools but refrain from teaching, and mandated the wearing of red armbands. This protest later escalated to a full-scale strike when a petition outlining the unions’ concerns did not yield satisfactory responses from the authorities.

Resolution and Assurances

During the meeting with the Regional Minister, an unreserved apology was extended on behalf of the military to the victims. The Minister assured the union leaders that such an incident would not be repeated in the future.

Furthermore, the Minister committed to facilitating a compensation package for the teachers who suffered the assault. To allow for the completion of this process, the Minister requested an extension until June 30, 2026, and appealed for the strike to be called off.
