Northern Region Gears Up for 2026 BECE with Over 37,000 Candidates

A total of 37,111 candidates from 808 schools across the Northern Region of Ghana are set to begin the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) on Monday, May 4. The examination will be held at 132 centres throughout the region, marking a crucial step in the academic progression for these students.

Exam Preparations Underway

The figure comprises a significant number of candidates from public institutions, with 33,329 students, and 3,782 from private schools. The gender distribution shows 19,026 male candidates and 18,085 female candidates participating in this year’s BECE.

To ensure the integrity and smooth conduct of the examination, the Northern Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service, in collaboration with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), has put in place robust logistical and supervisory measures. This includes the deployment of 132 supervisors, 130 assistant supervisors, and 1,321 invigilators strategically positioned across the region’s examination centres.

Importance of BECE Emphasized

Alhassan Alidu Junior, the Northern Regional Director of Education, addressed the candidates, urging them to approach the examination with confidence and a strong sense of determination. He highlighted the BECE’s significance as a pivotal stage in their educational careers, serving as a gateway to further academic opportunities.

The director also issued a stern warning against any form of examination malpractice. Candidates were strongly advised to adhere strictly to all examination regulations and refrain from engaging in practices such as using leaked questions or seeking unauthorized assistance during the tests.

The Regional Directorate has reiterated its unwavering commitment to upholding the credibility and integrity of the examination system. Officials emphasized that academic malpractice not only undermines educational standards but also negatively impacts individual integrity and the broader scope of national development.
