South Tongu Constituency Unveils Ambitious Development Agenda with Major Funding for Education and Economy

South Tongu Constituency is set to experience a significant developmental uplift following the announcement of substantial funding for educational infrastructure and economic initiatives by Member of Parliament Maxwell Lukutor. The first-term MP, who took office on January 7, 2025, revealed the secured funding, which targets three second-cycle schools and the establishment of a 24-hour market in Sogakope, aiming to address years of perceived underdevelopment in the area.

Addressing Decades of Neglect

For years, communities within the South Tongu Constituency, including Sogakope, Dabala, and Agave, have grappled with inadequate infrastructure. Roads such as the Gladisco to Agbeve stretch and the Dordoekofe to Agbadzakofe road have been in a state of disrepair, hindering economic activity and daily life. This situation has been a point of concern for constituents who have consistently supported the ruling National Democratic Congress.

In response to these challenges, Mr. Lukutor has introduced the Rapid Socio-Economic Transformation of South Tongu (RaSETST) agenda. This comprehensive plan focuses on key sectors including agriculture, education, tourism, and job creation. Constituents have noted visible signs of change emerging within the largely rural constituency over the past 15 months of his tenure.

Boost for Educational Infrastructure

A cornerstone of the new development drive is the significant investment in educational facilities, secured through the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund). Mr. Lukutor announced that contracts have been awarded for critical projects aimed at enhancing learning environments in several senior high schools.

Dabala Senior High School is slated to receive a modern dining hall with kitchen facilities, valued at GH¢15.75 million, and an assembly hall costing GH¢7.88 million. These facilities are expected to significantly improve the living and gathering conditions for students and staff.

Comboni Technical Vocational Institute will see the construction of a two-storey dormitory block, budgeted at GH¢6.69 million, and a 12-unit classroom block worth GH¢5.25 million. This investment underscores a commitment to strengthening technical and vocational training within the constituency.

St Catherine Senior High School is also set to benefit from substantial upgrades, including an assembly hall worth GH¢8.39 million, a dormitory block costing GH¢6.97 million, and a classroom block valued at GH¢5.04 million. These projects aim to provide better accommodation and learning spaces for students.

Furthermore, Sogakope Senior High School, an alma mater of Mr. Lukutor, will receive attention. Ongoing engagements are expected to secure additional projects for the school, alongside the provision of classroom desks for all educational institutions in the constituency.

Economic Revitalization Through 24-Hour Market

Beyond education, Mr. Lukutor is spearheading economic development initiatives, aligning with the government’s 24-hour economy policy. A key project announced is the construction of an ultra-modern 24-hour economy market in Sogakope.

This market, with an estimated cost of GH¢31.54 million, is designed to stimulate trade, foster job creation, and bolster the local economy. The initiative is expected to transform Sogakope into a vibrant commercial hub, operating around the clock.

Commitment to Equitable Development

Mr. Lukutor expressed his gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama and his administration for prioritizing the developmental needs of South Tongu. He reiterated his commitment to ensuring equitable development and expanding opportunities for all constituents.

Looking Ahead

The successful securing of these funds marks a significant step in the RaSETST agenda. Attention will now turn to the timely and efficient execution of these projects. The constituency will be watching closely to see how these infrastructure improvements translate into tangible benefits for education, trade, and overall quality of life for its residents. Further announcements regarding road rehabilitation and other sectors under the RaSETST agenda are anticipated in the coming months, signaling a new era of development for South Tongu.
