ECG Invests GH¢1.11 Billion to Stabilize Ashanti Region’s Power Supply

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is investing GH¢1.11 billion in a significant upgrade of the power distribution network in the Ashanti Region, beginning May 6, to address persistent electricity supply fluctuations and low voltage issues affecting customers. This initiative involves deploying 300 new distribution transformers and upgrading existing infrastructure to enhance reliability and meet growing demand.

Addressing Power Fluctuations

Customers in the Ashanti Region have recently experienced unstable electricity supply, characterized by power fluctuations and low voltage. The ECG’s intervention aims to provide immediate relief by replacing or upgrading overloaded equipment that is no longer capable of meeting community power needs.

The deployment of 300 new distribution transformers is a key component of this immediate response. These transformers are intended to alleviate the strain on the existing network, which has been struggling to cope with demand, leading to the observed supply issues.

Broader Infrastructure Improvement

Beyond the immediate deployment of transformers, the GH¢1.11 billion investment encompasses a broader strategy to strengthen the entire distribution network. This includes upgrading existing conductors to increase transmission capacity.

The upgrade of conductors from their current capacity to handle 400 megawatts, up from 265 megawatts, is crucial for supporting the increasing electricity demand in the Ashanti Region. This forward-looking approach aims to prevent future supply challenges as the region continues to develop and its energy needs grow.

ECG’s Commitment to Customers

Benjamin Obeng Antwi, the Public Relations Officer for ECG’s Ashanti West Region, assured customers that the ongoing upgrades are a deliberate effort to improve service delivery. He emphasized that this is not an isolated project but part of a larger government focus on enhancing infrastructure in the Ashanti Region.
