Roads Minister Confronts Contractor Over ‘Unacceptable’ Delays on Techiman–Wenchi Road Project

Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, confronted a contractor on Monday over significant delays and minimal progress on the Techiman–Wenchi road project. The minister discovered the lack of advancement during a routine monitoring tour, despite GH¢66 million in mobilization funds being disbursed five months prior. The discovery occurred in the Bono East Region, where the project is located.

Context of the Project and Funding

The Techiman–Wenchi road project is part of a larger national infrastructure initiative aimed at improving connectivity. Documents reviewed by the ministry indicated that the contractor received substantial mobilization funds late last year. This funding is intended to accelerate the commencement and execution of road works.

Mobilization funds are not considered a grant but an advance payment tied to performance. Deputy Roads Minister, Suhuyini, stressed that these funds are meant to expedite project timelines, not to justify delays. The significant amount disbursed highlights the expectation of rapid progress.

Minister’s Disappointment and Confrontation

Minister Agbodza, accompanied by his deputy and the Bono East Regional Minister, expressed strong dissatisfaction with the contractor’s performance. Upon inspecting the site, he observed that only surface vegetation clearing had been completed over five months. This minimal output stood in stark contrast to the funds released.
