Upper East Regional Minister, Mr. Akamugri Donatus Atanga, has urgently appealed to the Ghanaian government to initiate immediate rehabilitation of the severely deteriorating Tamale–Bolgatanga Highway. The appeal was made in Bolgatanga during the presentation of 550 laptops from the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) to support the region’s One Million Coders Programme.
Deteriorating Road Conditions Pose Significant Threats
The 163-kilometer stretch connecting the two regional capitals is now a major hazard for commuters. What was once a journey of approximately two and a half hours has been extended to nearly four hours for normal vehicles. This significant increase in travel time is attributed to numerous potholes that have progressively worsened into deep gullies.
Minister Atanga expressed deep concern over the road’s current state, lamenting the transformation of potholes into dangerous gullies. This degradation directly impacts travel safety and efficiency for thousands of residents and travelers.
Safety and Healthcare Implications
The poor condition of the highway has led to a rise in accidents, causing loss of life, property damage, injuries, and vehicle breakdowns. The risks are particularly amplified for critically ill patients being transported to the Tamale Teaching Hospital. Delays and the rough terrain expose these vulnerable individuals to additional dangers during transit, potentially worsening their medical conditions.
