UK Government Explores Hosting 2040s Olympics and Paralympics

The UK government has confirmed it is engaged in discussions to support potential bids for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the 2040s. This initial exploration will examine crucial factors including cost, socio-economic benefits, and the likelihood of a successful bid.

Assessing Feasibility for Future Games

Ministers are also considering backing bids for major golf tournaments, specifically the Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup, in the 2030s. These discussions form part of a broader strategy to enhance the UK’s capacity to host significant international sporting events.

The last time the UK hosted the Olympics was London in 2012. The Ryder Cup was last held in the UK at Gleneagles, Scotland, in 2014, with the Solheim Cup also taking place there in 2019.

Growing Momentum for Olympic Bid

There has been a discernible increase in support for a UK Olympic bid in recent months. London Mayor Sadiq Khan publicly expressed his desire for the city to bid for the 2040 Games last year.

With the International Olympic Committee (IOC) having already selected Los Angeles for 2028 and Brisbane for 2032, attention is turning towards future host cities. The IOC has yet to decide on locations for the 2036 Games and beyond.

Regional Aspirations and Northern Focus

In December, the chair of UK Sport indicated that a bid for the Olympics must be an aspiration. Suggestions have emerged that cities like Liverpool and Manchester could potentially co-host the event.

Further strengthening this regional focus, a group of political leaders in February urged the government to prioritize a bid based in the north of England. They presented a compelling case for the region to host the Games.

Boost for Golf and Other Major Events

The Ryder Cup, a prestigious biennial golf competition between Europe and the USA, sees 24 top players compete over three days. Host nations alternate between the two continents.

Bolton is currently bidding to host the 2035 Ryder Cup, which would mark the first time the event has been staged in England in over three decades.

England Golf has also been actively seeking government support to underwrite a bid for the Solheim Cup, a women’s golf tournament between Europe and the USA. This would be the first time the country hosts the event.

Legislative Framework to Support Bidding

As part of a new ‘sporting events framework,’ the government plans to introduce legislation making it a criminal offense to resell tickets for major sporting events, such as Euro 2028, without authorization. This measure aims to streamline the process of bidding for, securing, and delivering major sporting events.

The UK is also set to co-host Euro 2028 with the Republic of Ireland, and is the sole bidder for the 2035 Women’s World Cup.

Legislation was announced in November to outlaw the inflated resale of sports tickets, though this initially excluded football matches.

Looking Ahead: Strategic Hosting Vision

The government’s proactive approach to exploring Olympic bids and strengthening its framework for hosting major events signals a strategic vision for the UK’s role in international sports. Future developments will likely focus on detailed feasibility studies, potential venue assessments, and securing the necessary political and financial backing for these ambitious undertakings. The success of these bids could significantly impact the UK’s sporting infrastructure, economy, and global standing in the coming decades.
