Copa Coca-Cola Launches in Ghana, Aiming to Foster Youth Development Through Football

The Equatorial Coca-Cola Bottling Company (ECCBC), Ghana, officially launched the maiden edition of the Copa Coca-Cola 2026 tournament on Saturday, May 2, with group stage matches kicking off at the S2 Sport Club in Accra. The event brings together eight international and community schools to celebrate youth football, leadership, and community spirit, signalling a united commitment to youth development.

Building Excitement with a Trophy Tour

Prior to the official kickoff, the Copa Coca-Cola trophy embarked on a tour of the participating schools. This initiative aimed to build excitement and make the competition feel personal for the students. Many experienced seeing the trophy up close for the first time, connecting them directly to the prize they are competing for.

The participating schools include Ghana International School, Alpha Beta, Faith Montessori, Lycée Français International Jacques Prévert d’Accra, Ghana Christian International High School, International Community School, East Airport International School, and American International School, Ghana.

This tour underscored the spirit behind Copa Coca-Cola 2026, representing an investment in Ghana’s youth and a celebration of the communities ECCBC Ghana serves.

Football as a Vehicle for Youth Development

Felix Gomis, Managing Director of ECCBC WAC BU, highlighted the business’s motivation for the initiative. He emphasized the importance of contributing to the health and development of young people through football.

“This tournament is about our youth and how we can contribute to help them grow in a spirit of healthiness, confidence, and learning; grooming them to become the future leaders of tomorrow,” Gomis stated.

He added that the goal is to set a tone of starting small and scaling up, with the ultimate ambition of making Copa Coca-Cola a national Coca-Cola celebration.

Looking Ahead: Semi-Finals and Future Growth

The semi-finals and finals are scheduled for Saturday, May 9th, 2026. The four schools competing for the ultimate glory are Ghana International School, Lycée Français International Jacques Prévert d’Accra, International Community School, and East Airport International School.

ECCBC Ghana views this inaugural tournament as the foundation for a much larger initiative. Their ambition is to grow Copa Coca-Cola into a regional and national competition, starting in Accra and eventually encompassing all of Ghana.

The tournament aims to foster not just athletic talent but also leadership skills and community engagement among young participants. This foundational event in Accra is a strategic step towards creating a lasting legacy in youth sports development across the nation.
