Ghana and Nigeria Boxers Clash in Accra Friendly Ahead of Commonwealth Games

Ghana’s national boxing teams will host Nigeria in a crucial international friendly match in Accra on Thursday, May 7th, as both nations intensify preparations for the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Pre-Commonwealth Games Assessment

The bilateral tournament is designed to provide a high-level competitive platform for boxers from both Ghana and Nigeria to assess their readiness for the prestigious Commonwealth Games. This friendly bout serves as a vital stepping stone in their training camps.

A total of ten boxers will compete, featuring seven male pugilists across the official weight categories. The female contingent will include three boxers competing in the 54kg, 57kg, and 71kg divisions, aligning with Commonwealth Games requirements.

The Nigerian contingent has already arrived in Accra, signaling the immediate commencement of this important preparatory phase.

Federation Support and Future Plans

Alhaji Dauda Fuseini, President of the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF), and Babatunde Laguda, Chairman of the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) Technical Committee, have both lauded the initiative. They emphasized its effectiveness in evaluating boxers’ current form and competitive edge.

Laguda stated, “The Ghana friendly tournament is truly the way to go at a time like this. As you know, our boxers are currently camping in Lagos ahead of the Commonwealth Games, and this international friendly will further expose them to a more competitive atmosphere.”

The NBF Vice President, Omonlei Imadu, further revealed that discussions are underway with two other nations for additional friendly bouts. “As part of our camping ahead of the Glasgow Games, we are in the final stages of discussions with two other countries for friendly bouts. Our aim is to ensure the best possible preparation for our boxers before heading to the Games in July,” Imadu commented.

Boxing’s Significance for Ghana

Boxing holds a prominent position as Ghana’s leading medal-generating sport at major international competitions. Since its first participation in 1951, Ghana has secured a total of 35 boxing medals, contributing significantly to its overall tally of 62 medals.

At the most recent Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, Ghanaian boxers were instrumental in the nation’s success, winning three of the five medals. Abraham Mensah and Joseph Commey earned silver medals in the Bantamweight (54kg) and Featherweight (67kg) categories, respectively. Abdul Wahid Omar added a bronze medal in the Lightweight (60kg) division.

Looking Ahead to Glasgow

The 2026 Commonwealth Games are scheduled to take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from Thursday, July 23rd, to Sunday, August 2nd. This friendly match against Nigeria is a critical step for both teams as they fine-tune their strategies and athlete selections.

The upcoming bouts will offer valuable insights into the strengths and weaknesses of the participating boxers, influencing final team selections and tactical approaches for the Games. The GBF and NBF will be closely monitoring performance metrics to identify areas requiring further development before the athletes depart for Scotland.
