Dr. Ofori Sarpong, an alumnus and current board chairman of Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School (PRESEC), Legon, has donated a significant state-of-the-art facility to his alma mater. The donation, made recently, aims to recognize the foundational values, discipline, and training received from the institution. Dr. Sarpong, who also holds the position of global president of the PRESEC alumni association, delivered the facility to enhance the school’s infrastructure and educational environment.
Context of Alumni Support in Education
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has highlighted this generous contribution as a prime example of the increasing importance of alumni associations in the educational sector. Traditionally, alumni have provided support through various channels, but their role has evolved into becoming key stakeholders in institutional development.
These groups now contribute not only to infrastructure projects but also extend their support to vital areas such as student mentorship programs, scholarship funds, and contributing to the governance of their former schools. This comprehensive involvement strengthens the capacity of educational institutions to deliver holistic and competitive learning experiences.
The New Facility’s Impact
The newly donated state-of-the-art facility is poised to make a substantial impact on PRESEC’s student body. Its primary function will be to significantly improve student accommodation, thereby easing the current congestion within the boarding houses.
By providing better living conditions, the facility is expected to foster a more conducive learning environment for both current students and future generations. This enhancement directly supports the government’s broader objectives of expanding access to quality secondary education across the nation.
