Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has revealed that Burkina Faso’s military junta is allegedly using forced military conscription as a cover for the secret detention and abuse of dissidents, including investigative journalist Atiana Serge Oulon. The report, released recently, disputes the junta’s official narrative that high-profile figures are being sent to fight Islamist militants, instead suggesting they are held in clandestine facilities within the capital, Ouagadougou, highlighting a deepening human rights crisis under the current regime.
Disappearance of Investigative Journalist Atiana Serge Oulon
Atiana Serge Oulon, formerly the editor of the prominent newspaper L’Événement, was reportedly seized from his home in June 2024 by armed men in civilian attire. While the military government claimed Oulon had been conscripted into military service to combat Islamist insurgents, RSF’s findings challenge this account.
Evidence gathered from former detainees indicates Oulon was never deployed to a military unit, and his current whereabouts remain unknown to his family. RSF journalists Haïfa Mzalouat and Camille Montagu stated in a press release that Oulon’s alleged conscription was a
