Dr. Richard Owusu Nyarko, formerly the Vice President and Head of Academics at Ghana Christian University College, has ascended from humble beginnings in Nyameduase, a suburb of Bekwai in the Ashanti Region, to become an internationally recognized medical scholar and leader. His journey, marked by academic excellence and a commitment to advancing healthcare education and practice, showcases a remarkable blend of medical expertise and management acumen.
A Foundation in Education and Early Promise
Born to Gifty Adjei Boateng and Yaw Owusu Boateng, Dr. Nyarko’s educational path began early. He demonstrated exceptional academic talent from a young age, passing his Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) with distinction at Holy Child School in Obuasi. This success earned him admission to the prestigious Kumasi Anglican Secondary School (KASS).
His undergraduate studies were supported by a Knatto Complex Limited scholarship, enabling him to pursue studies at the Presbyterian University College. This period laid the crucial groundwork for his future dual career in medicine and management.
Dual Path in Medicine and Leadership
Guided by his mentor, Raymond Amedior, Dr. Nyarko embarked on his medical training. He commenced his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree program in Ghana before transitioning to the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, American International University of West Africa (AIUWA) in The Gambia.
His academic prowess was evident as he not only graduated but excelled, passing the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME, USA) IFOM 1 & 2 examinations. He achieved the distinction of being the valedictorian of his graduating class.
Credentials and Regional Recognition
Upon returning to Ghana, Dr. Nyarko’s foreign-trained medical credentials underwent verification by the Ghana Medical and Dental Council, a mandatory step for licensure. His qualifications also extend to regional recognition, as he is a registered and licensed medical doctor within the East African Community (EAC).
Advanced Studies and Academic Progression
Driven by a desire for continuous learning and broader impact, Dr. Nyarko pursued further postgraduate education. He completed a Master of Science in Clinical Leadership and Management (MSc-CLAM) at the University of Ghana. Additionally, he holds an Advanced Mastery Certificate in Business Administration and Enterprise Leadership from the Graduate School of Governance and Leadership (GSGL).
His academic pursuits culminated in a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Health Care Management, undertaken through the Ghana Communication Technology University in collaboration with Cass Europe, France.
Leadership at Ghana Christian University College
Dr. Nyarko’s career at Ghana Christian University College saw a significant upward trajectory. He advanced from an adjunct lecturer to a senior lecturer within the Faculty of Health Sciences, which is affiliated with the University of Development Studies. He became the first GTEC-approved and qualified dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences.
During his tenure as dean, he established key academic committees, including the Committee on Field Industry and Clinical Activities (COFICA), the Committee on Public Lecture, In-Service Training, and Seminars (COPLITS), the Committee on End of Semester Examinations Review, Modulation, and Acceptance (COESERMA), and the Ethical Research Review Committee (ERRC). He also introduced the role of principal faculty administrators and developed an organizational structure for the Faculty of Health Sciences.
Vice Presidency and Research Contributions
As the Immediate Past Vice President of Ghana Christian University College, Dr. Nyarko was instrumental in overseeing academic affairs. His extensive research background is demonstrated by over 40 peer-reviewed articles published in international journals. His contributions span critical fields such as medicine, surgery, pharmacology, and public health, providing vital data and insights.
Breaking International Barriers
Dr. Nyarko’s influence extends beyond national borders. He is actively engaged as a surgical resident with the College of Surgeons, East, Central and Southern Africa. He holds the distinction of being the first African admitted as a diplomat and Fellow of the American Professional Wound Care Association, as well as the first African fellow of the American College of Clinical Wound Specialists.
His professional affiliations include active memberships in the American Heart Association, the Medical Association of Tanzania, and the African Association of Physiological Sciences, underscoring his broad engagement in the global medical community.
