A police inspector is facing grave accusations from his wife, who alleges he sexually abused their biological teenage daughter, resulting in her pregnancy and a forced termination. The mother made these claims during a public interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, while also voicing frustration over the alleged lack of timely and effective action by the police after the case was reported.
Allegations Surface Amidst Claims of Police Inaction
The wife detailed a distressing timeline of events, stating that the matter was initially reported at Agona, where the inspector is stationed. However, she claims the investigation at that level was inadequate, with repeated assurances of follow-up that never materialized.
“I kept following up, but they kept telling me to go and come back,” she stated, expressing her disappointment with the initial handling of the complaint.
The case was subsequently transferred to Koforidua, where the victim, now 15, has reportedly struggled to cope emotionally and academically. Her mother shared that the trauma has severely impacted her daughter’s ability to concentrate in school, leading to flashbacks.
Further referrals were made to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Police Service in Koforidua and later to the national headquarters in Accra. Medical examinations conducted in both locations reportedly confirmed that the girl had contracted HIV.
“All the tests confirmed she has HIV,” the mother revealed, adding another layer of concern to the already harrowing allegations.
Petition and Investigation So Far
A formal petition was submitted to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in January. Following this, the accused inspector was reportedly invited for questioning in Accra.
During interrogation, the inspector allegedly denied all accusations made against him. Despite these denials and the ongoing complaints, the wife asserts that no decisive action has been taken to address the situation.
“We have done all we can, but justice is still not served,” she lamented.
The alleged abuse reportedly began when the victim was between 10 and 11 years old. The mother also reported that the inspector continues to issue threats when approached by the family.
“He keeps insulting us whenever we try to reach him,” she said.
Call for Swift Justice
The mother is now urgently calling for a thorough investigation into the allegations and swift action to ensure justice for her daughter. The case highlights critical issues surrounding the handling of sexual abuse cases within law enforcement families and the potential for systemic delays in delivering justice.
Implications and Future Watch
This case raises significant questions about accountability within the police force and the effectiveness of internal complaint mechanisms. The alleged delay in investigation and the reported denial by the accused inspector underscore the challenges victims face, particularly when the accused is a member of the same institution tasked with protecting them. The public will be watching closely to see if the IGP and CID will expedite their investigation and take appropriate action. Further developments will likely focus on the legal proceedings against the inspector and any potential reforms implemented to prevent similar occurrences and ensure swifter, more sensitive handling of such sensitive cases within the police service.
