Acting Rent Commissioner Frederick Opoku has accused some private hostel operators of exploiting students by unfairly incorporating utility charges into their accommodation fees. The comments, made on JoyNews’ Super Morning Show, specifically question the practice of charging fixed utility fees to students in hostels equipped with prepaid electricity meters.
Concerns Over Fixed Utility Charges
Mr. Opoku challenged the rationale behind hostel operators bundling electricity costs into rent, arguing that students should be allowed to manage and pay for their own energy consumption directly. He highlighted the inherent unfairness in such a system, particularly in shared accommodation where individual usage varies significantly.
