More than 1,000 passengers remain confined aboard the UK-operated cruise ship Ambition in Bordeaux, France, following an outbreak of gastrointestinal sickness that has affected 49 individuals. Local health authorities implemented the restriction, isolating affected passengers in their cabins and preventing others from disembarking as a precautionary measure.

Health Authorities Respond to Outbreak

The situation unfolded as the Ambition docked in Bordeaux. French health authorities confirmed that three passengers were initially isolated. The regional health agency for Nouvelle-Aquitaine dispatched a medical team to the vessel to assess the outbreak. Samples were collected and sent to Bordeaux University Hospital for analysis to determine the exact cause of the illness.

Disembarkation was suspended as a precautionary measure due to the contagious nature of gastroenteritis-type illnesses. The cruise line stated that results from the tests were expected within six hours. Authorities have emphasized there is no current link to a separate hantavirus outbreak on another cruise ship.

Cruise Operator Confirms Illnesses and Implements Protocols

Ambassador Cruise Line, based in Essex, confirmed that as of Wednesday morning, 48 passengers and one crew member were displaying symptoms consistent with gastrointestinal illness, which typically includes diarrhea and vomiting. Cases in adults are often attributed to norovirus or food poisoning.

The cruise line reported an increase in cases after guests boarded in Liverpool. The Ambition departed Belfast on May 8th and proceeded to Liverpool the following day. The ship currently carries 1,187 guests and 514 crew members.

In response to the outbreak, Ambassador Cruise Line implemented enhanced sanitation and prevention protocols across the ship. These measures align with established public health procedures and include increased cleaning and disinfection in public areas. Guests are also receiving ongoing guidance on hand hygiene and are instructed to report any symptoms to the onboard medical team.

Passenger Experiences and Concerns

Passengers onboard described a noticeable shift in onboard activities and services. Carol Landa-Vance, a passenger from County Antrim, observed changes starting Sunday. Self-service buffets were suspended, with condiments removed and cutlery pre-wrapped and handed out by staff.

The ship’s swimming pools and jacuzzi were also closed. Landa-Vance noted witnessing sickness among passengers, stating, “It’s a wee bit scary but people are in mostly good spirits.”

David Munster, another passenger, reported being informed of illnesses after departing Liverpool. He expressed uncertainty about whether passengers would be allowed to explore Bordeaux or remain confined to the ship. While passengers could still use open facilities, those unwell were isolating in their cabins.

Munster acknowledged the hardworking efforts of the ship’s staff in managing the situation. Michael Gallagher, from County Tyrone, decided to remain in his cabin with his wife, avoiding additional entertainment provided by the crew. He described the atmosphere as one of shock, noting this was an unprecedented experience in his extensive travel history.

A spokesperson for the UK Health Security Agency stated they were aware of the outbreak but awaiting confirmation of the specific illness. They confirmed liaison with French authorities regarding British passengers on board. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in France also acknowledged the reports and offered assistance.

Ambassador Cruise Line extended condolences to the family of a 92-year-old man who passed away on board on Sunday. The company specified that the deceased did not report symptoms related to the gastrointestinal illness, and the cause of death is pending a coroner’s investigation.
